Quality requirements for sponge iron production are subdivided into the following categories:
- Physical requirements: Depending on the reducibility, precisely calibrated ores in the size range of 0 to 5 mm are typically utilised. The ideal tumbler strength of the ore should be at least 70%.
- Metallurgical requirements: The ore should have a low tendency to stick or disintegrate during heating and reduction, be highly reducible, and be thermally stable.
- Chemical requirements: Direct reduction only results in the elimination of oxygen. The economics of the succeeding steel-making process is negatively impacted by the gangue material in sponge iron, which is composed of silica and alumina.
